maille serrée

Learn how to make a single crochet stitch (sc) o a double crochet stitch (UK) step by step, with pictures and descriptions. Video to single crochet stitch explanation at the end of the page (clic to be moved to there).

This is the basic crochet stitch, the one by which you learn crochet, but also the basic stitch for making amigurumis.

Supplies

  • Crochet: 2.25 mm
  • Yarn: Scheepjes Catona n°520
  • Markers

Single crochet, working in rows

We will crochet in rows, but you can also crochet in rounds or in a spiral (see below). Start with a chain of the desired length, 21 chain stitches in the example.

Chain technique that you will find here.

In the second stitch from the hook
Insert your hook and bring back the yarn through one loop
Yarn over
Bring back the yarn through the two loops
Repeat the same operation in the following stitches. 20 stitches in total
Here the 2nd stitch
Place a mark on your first stitch, the previous one)

After making the last single crochet in the last chain stitch, make a chain stitch and turn your work.

End of 1st row, 1 ch
First a yarn over
Then bring back the yarn through the loop
Turn the work
Make a stitch in the 2nd stitch from the hook
Make a single crochet stitch
Yarn over
Bring back the yarn through the two loops
Mark the 1st stitch of the 2nd row

Continue crocheting single crochet stitches in the previous ones, skipping the ch (chain stitch) you just made. Repeat with as many rows as desired. This is ideal for practicing crocheting on a regular basis.

Single crochet, working in spiral rounds

This is often how you will start amigurumis. Start with a magic ring, the technique of which you will find here. Make 6 single crochet stitches in the ring. This is the number most often found when making basic shapes.

Bring back the yarn through the ring
Yarn over
Bring back the yarn through the two loops
Continue crocheting stitches
6 sc (single crochet stitches)

Close the magic ring. Take one of the two yarns, and pull lightly to find the middle one.

Pull the middle yarn
Pull the last yarn
Continue crocheting

Then, make a single crochet stitch in your first stitch if you are crocheting in a spiral, otherwise make a slip stitch in your first stitch if you are crocheting in the round. Here I crocheted a single crochet stitch in the first stitch of the magic ring, so I crocheted in a spiral.

1 single stitch
I make a sc in the same stitch, I make an increase
2 sc in the same stitch: increase
Mark the 1st stitch of the 2nd row

Single crochet, working in rounds

The magic ring is a great way to start crochet projects worked in the round. This technique is used to obtain visually straighter rows. However, you will see a not very aesthetic demarcation.

Start with a magic circle, the technique of which you will find here.

Make 6 single crochets stitches in the magic ring and close the magic ring.

Instead of continuing to crochet single crochets stiches in the previous stitches, you will make a slip stitch in the first stitch to close the round, then a chain stitch. Then continue to crochet normally in the first stitch of the magic circle.

Slip stitch finished, magic ring closed
Slip stitch (ch)
